Delhi University slapped with Rs. 76 crore bill

To recover property tax dues that run in excess of Rs. 76 crore, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has issued a property tax bill to Delhi University with a warning to ?pay within 15 days of issue to avoid penal action?.

The bill issued by the civic body?s Assessment & Collection Department dated January 9 has asked Delhi University to pay a total sum of Rs. 76,48,77,810 due for the period from April 1988 to March 2004. The amount due is more than double the initial estimates of Rs. 35 crore that the North Delhi Municipal Corporation had calculated earlier this month. According to officials, the University had been evading tax by calling itself a charitable trust which is entitled to tax exemption under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

However, since other Central universities such as Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University have been paying property tax to the civic body, such a claim is not valid, they said.

Earlier, Delhi University had challenged the notice given by the civic body before the court and claimed that it was entitled to exemption from paying property tax. However, the claim was rejected by the court and a re-assessment of properties was ordered.
