3 Uncommon Strategies to Manage Stress | Psychology Today

It's natural for most people to do what everyone else is doing, and in many cases, what everyone else is doing works out fine. But sometimes, this?within-the-lines kind of?thinking can cause us to forget that there is more than one way to effectuate change or improvement in our lives.?

I often see this happen?early on in the stress management planning process of most people. Ask for?someone's ideas as to what?strategies they can use to?help them better manage the stress in their lives, and inevitably, you'll hear exercise, yoga, deep breathing, warm baths, massage?all the typical things most people think of when they think about stress relief. And although there is certainly nothing wrong with any of these strategies, there are many, many more ways to reduce stress than the typical ones.

To try and encourage some out-of-the-box thinking, I thought I'd write about a few?"uncommon," yet highly effective stress?relief strategies.?I've used diamonds to rank them in order of difficulty to accomplish (the more diamonds, the harder to do), but with that said, keep in mind that some of the most difficult challenges in life bring about the most rewards.

? Rediscover nature.

Remember when you were a kid and the great outdoors was such a wonderous adventure. One of the most?unfortunate side effects of modern society is that it has fractured our connection to nature.?Sadly, most people today spend a large majority of their time (some say as much as 90 percent) indoors. That's a waste for many reasons, says Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle: Reconnecting with Life in a Virtual Age.?The premise of his book revolves around an intriguing question:?What would our lives be like if we were as immersed in nature as we are in technology??

Decades of research have shown that?interactions?with nature have a multitude of life-enhancing effects.?Referring to connecting with nature as a dose of "vitamin N," Louv says that?benefits include an?enhanced use of our?senses, a reported higher satisfaction with life, a more positive outlook on lie, increased?productivity at work, and an enhanced ability to cope with stress and recover from stress, illness, and injury.?He also describes a?University of Michigan study that found that after only an hour of connecting with nature,?memory performance and attention spans improved by 20 percent, and a?University of Kansas study that found?a 50 percent boost in creativity from being outdoors for a?few days.

Louv?also raises a thought-provoking point. saying that?baby boomers "could be the last generation to remember a time when it was considered normal and expected for children to play in woods and fields. When we leave this earth, will the memory of such experiences leave with us? Reconnecting the young to the natural world (as we reconnect ourselves) could be our greatest, most redemptive cause," which provides a nice segue for the next uncommon stress reducer.

Most people don't think about donating their time or talent as a remedy for?stress, but it can be a high effective stress reliever.?In an article for American Medical News, Dr. Stephen Post, author of It?s Good to be Good: 2011 Fifth Annual Scientific Report on Health, Happiness and Helping Others, points out, "Just by taking a vacation from your stress and problems and turning your attention to helping someone else, it's a tremendously healthy thing."

Post says that one of the key studies in his annual report was a United Health Care survey of over 4,500 adults that found that 68 percent of volunteers felt physically better as a result of volunteering, 27 percent said it helped them manage a chronic illness, and most reported that donating their time enriched their sense of purpose and lowered their stress levels. Giving back also can help people realize that?their problems pale in comparison to what others in need are experiencing, which also can reduce stress.

The reason I gave it two diamonds for difficulty is because many people find it challenging these days to find?the time to volunteer, but this is a situation where even a small amount of time can reap much larger benefits. ??? Work to resolve conflicts.

Although many people are?not?consciously aware of how much stress conflict adds to their life (because?we're biologically designed to adapt to the status quo), rest assured it's significant. Ongoing tension and conflict in relationships, whether at home, work, or otherwise, is one of the biggest causes of stress in people's lives. Think about it. Close your eyes and think about a conflict-free relationship in your life, one that you really enjoy. (When I ask people to do this, I often see a natural smile come to their face, or if not a smile, at least signs of relief or lack of tension in their face and body language.) Now close your eyes and think about the person in your life that you have the most conflict with, the one that you dread being around or are apprehensive about being around. By doing this contrast, most people quickly recognize the dramatic changes in how they mentally and physically feel just when thinking about the two relationships.

Conflicted relationships weigh you down by adding significant stress to your life. And even when you're not around that person, thoughts about them and the problems they cause you intrude into your consciousness, making you feel drained, like you're carrying extra weight around.

So try to work it out. What's the worse that can happen? You're already burdened by the conflict. Anything that moves the relationship in a positive direction, even the smallest movement, can only help. You don't have to love the person. Just figure out a plan that will allow you to peacefully coexist in the same space, which can go a long way in removing those intrusive thoughts about the person when she/her is not around. You never know how the relationship will grow from there.

Clients who have succeeded in reducing or resolving their conflicts with others report feeling as if a huge weight has been lifted off their shoulders and are often surprised at how unaware they were of how much stress the conflicted relationship had been adding to their life. Is it a challenge to accomplish? Yes. Will it remove a ton of stress from your life? Absolutely.

Hopefully, these three uncommon stress management strategies will not only help you reduce stress in your life, they will also get you thinking outside the box with respect to an overall stress reduction plan. The?great thing about?stress management is that it can be as unique as you are, so don't be afraid to explore a variety ideas to find the ones that work best for you and fit best into your lifestyle. You are the?only one who can determine which stress relievers are the right ones to incorporate into your stress management plan. Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, relaxing is in the mind of the relaxer. What works for you?

What do you get when you attach a point-and-shoot, display, microphone, RFID reader and a bunch of big buttons to a clear plastic box and stick it all in a classroom with a bunch of three- to five-year-olds? Carnegie Mellon's CREATE Lab calls the creation Message from Me. It's a way of engaging early education students with technology, developing language and social skills and helping keep parents abreast of their school day activities.

The tool encourages kids to record a thought or take a picture and send it to a parent by pulling a card with their face on it down from the wall and scanning on the RFID reader. Parents can get updates via text message or email from kids who are often unable to pass along such information at the end of the day. According to the lab, the machines have already been installed in nearly a dozen schools in the Pittsburgh area -- and from the looks of the boxes on the floor in the CREATE Lab, plenty more are on the way.

Is Russ George a "rogue geoengineer," salmon savior or something else?

This past July Russ George served as chief scientist on a cruise to fertilize the northeastern Pacific Ocean with iron?the latest in a long string of similar, and usually controversial, efforts he has led. He has been attempting to commercialize such ocean fertilization efforts for years, including setting up the failed company Planktos. In parallel, he has also been promoting plans to generate carbon credits for companies and governments, allowing them to emit greenhouse gases in exchange for replanting carbon dioxide-absorbing forests from Canada to Europe.

The ocean fertilization experiment is similar. The idea is that by providing missing nutrients, a plankton bloom can be created. Such a bloom sucks up CO2 as it grows, like plants on land, and then, potentially, buries that carbon at sea as the tiny corpses sink to the bottom. But at the same time, George is hoping the bloom will trickle up the food chain and feed salmon, restoring their historic abundance. Of course, if the bloom is eaten, then animal metabolism will reemit the CO2, sending it back to the atmosphere and defeating the purpose of reducing CO2 emissions, as prior scientific studies have shown.

George says he is convinced that iron fertilization can be a solution to global warming, and he's pitched the idea to everyone from the Haida people of British Columbia to would-be "seasteaders" looking for a business proposition for their floating cities. Given the controversy surrounding George's latest bid?which is billed as an attempt to restore salmon populations but also aims to earn saleable carbon credits?Scientific American spoke with him on October 19.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

How did this Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. project start?
This is a village project. They started it, they own it, they run it. It's not the Russ George rogue geoengineering story.

You've seen the vile and vehement twisting of this story. You can probably imagine how I feel. I was the faith and trust and hopes and dreams of a village whose environment is dying, whose culture is dying because the salmon are dying. And now the world is saying they were duped.

So did the iron fertilization work?
We don't know. A really famous scientist once told me: "Russ, keep in mind: you don't know." The correct attitude is: "Data, speak to me." Do the work, get the data, let it speak to you and tell you what the facts might be. Don't assume you have this prescient knowledge of how everything is.

But we do know that in 2008 when 450 million sockeye salmon left the Fraser River, the expectation was that fewer than one million would return. More and more baby salmon go to sea and fewer and fewer adult salmon return. But in August 2008 a volcano dusted ash, and the northeastern Pacific Ocean turned into a massive plankton bloom. The plankton bloom was of larger proportion than what we did in the area. So 40 million fish came home instead of a million. That offered some hope.

There have been three volcanic events in the last 100 years paired with record sockeye salmon runs. That's pretty good data. Those fish don't do fishy science, they do good science. Their physical bodies are data, you can track where they've been because of the discrete isotopic characteristics of different parts of the ocean.

Rev. Jesse Jackson arrested in protest with workers

FREEPORT, Ill. (AP) ? The Rev. Jesse Jackson has been arrested in a group of protesting northern Illinois workers during an act of civil disobedience in Freeport.

Michael Peery, a spokesman for Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, tells The Associated Press that Jackson was taken into custody Wednesday with about a dozen workers. He is expected to be released later in the day.

Freeport police didn't immediately have comment.

Sensata (sen-SAH'-tuh) Technologies is owned by Bain Capital and in the process of moving its Freeport manufacturing operations to China. That'll cost Freeport 170 jobs.

Company officials say most of the plant's revenues are generated in Asia, making the move a logical decision.

The civil rights leader has been among other high-profile supporters who've visited the workers. The Rev. Al Sharpton recently held a rally in Freeport.

Kalofagas Greek Supper Club ? An Evening in Florina Recap ...

My bones are a little achy today but I?m beaming (still) after last night?s Supper Club with a focus on the cuisine of Florina. Being that this region is where my parents are from, I went into this dinner very confident but also still worried because I knew some folks would be there who shared the same ancestry (from towns in/around Florina). Would the food be as good as Yiayia?s? I think so.

The sold out event was a mixture of friends who have attended prior dinners of mine, some new and curious attendees, Greeks and non-Greeks (lovers of our cuisine) and of course, wine lovers who know Greek wines are ?where it?s at?. The menu was paired almost exclusively with Kir Yanni wines (Boutari) from Naoussa and Amynteon. Many thanks to Steve Kriaris of Kolonaki Group who chose the wines of the evening and even brought a surprise offering of Kir Yanni Ramnista for all guests to try out!

Three appetizers were rolled out: Taltsenes from Florina and made with fire roasted eggplant, red peppers and tomatoes, Kebapia and housemade Prassopita, a leek and Feta pie made with hand-opened phyllo.

One of the indispensible ingredients of Greek cuisine is olive oil and I delighted when chef, TV personality, Christine Cushing offered to supply her signature oils for cooking and for liberal bread-dunking at each table with my homemade Floriniotiko Lagana topped with sesame seeds.

Christine also has two roasted red pepper sauces, one mild and the other spicy for the heat freaks out there. The jars with opened up, dipped in, swooshed and smeared on bread. Thank you again, Christine!

Great olive oil turns simple dishes into manna from the Gods and my rice and herb stuffed peppers soared with a liberal use of Christine Cushing?s olive oil. The dish was heightened even more with the incorporation of Katsamaki ? another Florina recipe using cornmeal, beef stock and grated Kefalograviera cheese.

The second dish that got a few good shakes of the olive oil was the roast potatoes with onions, carrots, sweet and hot peppers, smoked Greek paprika and some Boukovo. A little more olive oil and some dried Greek oregano and all this dish needs is some high heat roasting in the oven.

The main course was some braised beef short ribs, slow-cooked for 4 hours in homemade beef stock and Xinomavro red from Kir Yanni. The aromas of bay, thyme and allspice perfumed the studio kitchen space where I hosted the dinner. A big thanks to Vanessa of Aphrodite Cooks!

The dinner just kept on getting better and better. One should always leave room for dessert and the evening?s final course was Touloumbes on a bed of strained Greek yogurt with lots of lemon zest and Attiki honey from Greece.

After three appetizers, a soup, stuffed peppers, braised beef and roast potatoes, Touloumbes for dessert and lots of wine in between and during each course, the evening came to a close. One last offering? of Greek coffee and new friends and old experienced some New Greek cusine. New in that this was regional Greek cooking?looking beyond the well-known taverna faves, the often praised Cretan and Aegean island dishes. There?s more to Greek food than the Athenian estiatorio or the taverna of Thessaloniki.

It was my pleasure to feature my family?s regional cooking (Florina) and soon I will feature your family?s regional cooking. Pencil-in November 18th for my next dinner.

Dentsu-owned ratings agency to measure Twitter to rate TV shows in Japan

There?s further evidence of Twitter?s mainstream presence in Japan after Dentsu-owned TV audience ratings service Video Research revealed plans to introduce a new rating system based on the volume of mentions from users of the microblogging service.

Anyone who has ever used Twitter with any kind of regularity knows that many tweets from the service are related to TV shows or events linked to TV broadcasts, so this move has plenty of logic in Japan ? where the service has some 15 million registered users. Twitter has officially backed the strategy, and it has granted Video Research access to an API to its hashtag streaming service to help, reports Asiajin.

Initially, the company will measure related tweets relating to programs by looking at the number of tweets per minute and also the average over the previous 4 weeks.

From the tie-in, we can expect Twitter, Video Research and broadcasters themselves to encourage viewers to use official hashtags and make mentions of shows on the service, as they look to boost their ratings.

Asiajin explains that Video Research?s rating system ??Shichouritsu ? is used by Japan?s national TV networks who rely on it to help sell advertising spots. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see not only how it is embraced by users, but how broadcasters market and promote Twitter to their audiences.

Many TV shows integrate the service in some way, such as X-Factor US, which?added voting by Twitter in November 2011, while the microblogging site is particularly popular for sports. Superbowl 46 became the most viewed US television program ever when it clocked up 13.7 million related tweets in February, but Japan?s TV-Twitter pedigree is even stronger.

A national TV screening of the highly popular Anime?Castle in the Sky?currently holds the overall record for the most tweets per second on the service. The December 2011 broadcast generated 25,088 tweets per second, that?s a whopping 9,000 more (per second) than the previous best, which followed the?announcement of Beyonce?s pregnancy.

This tie-in could well be a glimpse of the future in Western markets as Twitter, and others like Facebook, continue to become mainstream communications channels through which brands, broadcasters and others engage and are discussed by consumers.

Twitter launched a?new Lifeline feature in Japan last month, the feature helps people find relevant accounts quickly during emergencies, demonstrating its focus on the Asian country.

Tony Scott Death Officially Ruled a Suicide | Gather

A lot of fans of the famed director, Tony Scott, were holding out hope there was something behind his leap to death off a Los Angeles bridge. Unfortunately, it appears his death was just what it originally seemed -- a suicide.

According to the coroner's report, the director died of multiple blunt force traumas consistent with those he would have received by jumping into the harbour. There was no evidence of other medical problems, despite rumors circulating that Scott was dying from terminal brain cancer.

Scott did have drugs in his system. They included Remeron, an anti-depressant, and Lunesta, a sleep agent. It seems doubtful, however, that they had anything to do with Scott taking his life.

Early reports by eye witnesses claimed that Scott purposefully jumped from the bridge, leading everyone to believe the suicide theory. That seemed further validated by notes that Tony left in his car as well as at his home. What isn't known, however, is what directly triggered the action. That was not addressed in the so-called "suicide notes".

Some claim the highly creative genius probably straddled a line between sanity and insanity for many years. However, there is little evidence to back up such radical thoughts. By all accounts, although sometimes suffering from depression, he showed little signs of being suicidal.

Ultimately, it matters not how Tony Scott died. It only matters that he'll be missed by those who loved him; his family and friends and, of course, brother Ridley Scott. Tony's fans will miss him too!

The Causes Of Skin Cancer | Better Innovations Blog

Every year around 100,000 people in the UK are newly diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer. These figures make it one of the most common types of cancer in the country. It should perhaps then come as no surprise that the biggest cause of non-melanoma skin cancer is something that we?re exposed to every single day ? sunlight.

The dangers of sunlight
This is because sunlight contains harmful ultraviolet light that over time can damage the skin. There are two types of ultraviolet light ? ultraviolet light A and ultraviolet light B, often simply referred to as UVA and UVB.

Some people wrongly assume that non-melanoma skin cancer only affects people that have been burnt by the sun. While a history of sunburnt skin does increase the chances of developing non-melanoma skin cancer, many people who have never been burnt in their lives can develop the cancer. This is why it?s vital that you limit your exposure to the sun ? many experts actually recommend that people avoid the sun altogether if possible.

For many people this is impractical, but it?s strongly recommended that when the sun is at its strongest you take cover. Sunscreen that protects you from both UVA and UVB should also be worn.

Genetic predispositions and risk factors
While sunlight is recognised as the leading cause of non-melanoma skin cancer, there are other factors that come into play. For example, scientific studies have shown that there is likely to be a genetic link when it comes to developing non-melanoma skin cancer.

People with two or more close relatives that have had a form of non-melanoma skin cancer are more at risk of the condition themselves. Other risk factors include having pale skin, red or blonde hair and blue eyes. Skin that has an abundance of moles or freckles is also more at risk. People with one or more of these risk factors should be extra cautious about their exposure to sunlight.

Suppressed immune systems
If you have a condition, such as HIV, or take medicine that suppresses the immune system, you are also at more risk of non-melanoma skin cancers. In fact, Kaposi?s sarcoma is a relatively rare cancer that at one point affected around 1 in 5 people with HIV until medication known as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was introduced.

Types of skin cancer
Other rare non-melanoma skin cancers include cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (also known as Mycosis fungoides) and Merkell cell cancer.

The most common type of non-melanoma skin cancer is by far basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma accounts for around 80% of all cases (around 80,000 diagnoses a year).

Tight end Chris Cooley confirmed to The Washington Post on Monday that he passed his physical and has rejoined Washington as a replacement for Fred Davis, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury on Sunday.

Washington released the 28-year-old Cooley in August. He worked out for other teams but did not sign.

Davis went down in the first half of his team?s loss to the Giants on Sunday. Davis was the team?s leading receiver with 23 catches for 312 yards entering Sunday?s game.

Insight: Murky deals cast doubt over Nigeria's power sell-off

ABUJA (Reuters) - For decades Nigeria has failed to fix chronic electricity shortages that stifle growth and help keep millions in poverty.

That is about change, the government says, when most of the power sector is privatized by the end of the year. Its target is to increase electricity output tenfold to 40,000 megawatts by 2020.

Turning on the lights in a country where power cuts are a daily ordeal could push Nigeria's growth into double digits and help diversify its economy away from oil, which in 50 years has created a super-rich elite but has done little to reduce mass poverty.

Yet since power minister Barth Nnaji resigned in August over an alleged conflict of interest, doubts are gathering about the integrity of the process, as oligarchs with scant experience in running power firms line up for a slice of this lucrative pie.

As with Russia in its 1992-1994 sell off of state assets, it is entrenched political and business elites who look set to win much of Nigeria's power sector, even while Western aid agencies are backing the process with tens of millions of dollars.

The government announced preferred bidders for 10 power distribution firms this week and has approved bids for five power plants, a major step forward. But already the companies who lost out and labor unions have said the process was fraudulent and the results to be scrapped.

The wealthy figures behind the consortia bidding already control vast stakes in Nigeria's economy and political machine, and many of the assets only had one approved bidder each. It is often felt that since the oligarchs have such sway in Nigeria, it is better to have them in the process rather than outside it.

In past Nigerian privatization efforts, unqualified bidders and political wrangling caused years of legal battles and delays after assets were awarded. Sometimes funds were diverted to people who failed to revive the firms and left debts unpaid.

Nigeria tried to sell former telephone monopoly NITEL for more than 10 years but buyers who won privatization bids never paid up. After years of legal rows, it remains in state hands.

The stakes are higher for power.

"For a sector being primed for the most comprehensive overhaul in its history, it was perhaps expected that entrenched forces of the ancient regime would not let go without a fight," Nigerian policy analyst Sanya Oni said.

"It is ... the beginning of the long, difficult road."

POWER GODFATHERS

Despite holding the world's seventh largest gas reserves, Nigeria produces less than a tenth of the amount electricity South Africa provides for a population a third of the size.

Some $40 billion has gone into reforms in the last 20 years, says Control Risks, a consultancy, yet power has only improved slightly.

Sorting out this mess would seal President Goodluck Jonathan's legacy.

The Power Holding Company of Nigeria is being sold as six generation firms and 11 distribution companies. A contract for transmission has been given to Canadian firm Manitoba Hydro.

Among the figures angling for a slice of privatized power is billionaire businessman Emeka Offor. His company Chrome Group is the highest bidder for firms in the capital Abuja and Enugu.

Offor made his fortune from government contracts, especially under military dictator Sani Abacha in 1990s.

Between 1999 and 2002, Chrome Group worked on a $100 million contract for maintenance on Nigeria's Port Harcourt oil refineries, in Africa's biggest oil industry. They have operated at just 30 percent capacity since, and the state oil firm has said the work was not done properly.

"The turnaround maintenance was successfully completed and duly handed over to Port Harcourt Refining Company," Chrome Group spokeswoman Val Oji wrote in an email, with the relevant completion certificates attached, when asked about it.

Global Witness, a UK-based watchdog, investigated Offor's Seychelles-registered oil firm Starcrest in February. It said it won an oil block in 2006, then within months signed Swiss firm Addax on as 'technical partner' for a $35 million fee.

That deal left Starcrest with a big minority stake, and Addax, the firm with the expertise to produce the oil, paid a $55 million signature bonus. Offor told the NGO that Nigeria's financial crimes commission had cleared Starcrest of wrongdoing.

The deal resembles arrangements common in Nigeria, in which a company run by a local oligarch 'partners' with a foreign firm with the know how, and takes a cut.

Industry sources say power privatization is going on in the same way, which will make it slow and costly, even if it does finally turn the lights on.

Oji cited two transmission lines completed in the northern state of Gombe in 2010 as evidence Chrome had relevant experience.

OTHER PLAYERS

Another powerful figure lining up is General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who was military ruler for a year after Abacha's death in 1998. He chairs Integrated Energy, which has the preferred bid for electricity distribution companies in Yola, Ibadan and the two covering the commercial capital Lagos.

Local press have reported that former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida, one of the most powerful 'godfathers', is putting his weight behind the North South Power Company, the only consortium approved to bid on the Shiroro plant.

A spokesman for Babangida, Kassim Afegbua, however denied that he was "involved in any power company at all".

Bola Tinubu, former Lagos governor of Lagos and undisputed godfather of Nigeria's commercial hub, is backing Oando's bid for a distribution company servicing the south, including Lagos. Oando, run by his nephew Wale, is an oil and gas company, but it has made small inroads into power.

It set up the Akute Power company to develop a 12.15 MW power station that now services a Lagos water plant.

Tony Elumelu's Transnational Corporation, which owns, amongst other things, The Hilton hotel in Abuja, is a preferred bidder for the Ugheli thermal power plant.

"None of these guys has much of a background in power. They can't do it alone. They need partners," said Bismarck Rewane, CEO of Lagos-based consultancy Financial Derivatives.

Some do have them. Yet globally respected power companies like AES, Essar and Schneider Electric who showed an initial interest in buying assets in 2010 decided not to join up with Nigerian partners and bid.

Others involved in bids, including Arumemi Johnson, the chairman of airline Arik Air, and billionaire oil magnate Femi Otedola, were banned last month by the central bank from borrowing money due to unpaid debts -- poor financing is a key risk to the long-term success of power projects, as the government estimates the industry needs $10 billion a year.

Otedola repaid his debt days after the ban was announced.

"In the history of privatization in this country, the common wealth has largely ended in the hands of senior government officials and their cronies and kin," wrote Mohammed Haruna in The Nation on Wednesday. "Unless the authorities ... guarantee integrity, their privatized offspring can only bring more pain."

"LACKING TRANSPARENCY"

U.S. and British aid agencies are overseeing this process.

Britain's Department for International Development (DFID) pays 200,000 pounds ($322,800) a year for some embedded consultants who also have strong political ties, a source who has worked on one of the power projects they fund said.

A DFID spokesman told Reuters they had helped to make the privatization "as transparent as possible". DFID has spent 21 million pounds since 2007 on the power sector. Since then, generation has risen by roughly 1,000 megawatts, according to Nigerian government data. Yet tens of thousands are needed.

"An independent review ... concluded that a substantial part of the increase in power supply would not have occurred without ... these expert advisers," the DFID spokesman said.

No new minister was appointed after Nnaji resigned on August 28 over allegations he was involved in Geometric, one of the firms bidding. DFID openly funded Nnaji's office throughout, even though it was public knowledge that he has a stake in Geometric.

"The irony for donors is that they stand accused of helping to fuel the very practices they aim to combat .... lending credibility to a process they should have known to (be) lacking in transparency," said Antony Goldman, head of PM consulting.

Nnaji was seen as a technically competent minister, but a power ministry source says he did not get on with Vice President Namadi Sambo, the man with the most influence over the sector.

Sambo is head of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP), which has the final say on which firms make it through the bidding process. He also manages the National Independent Power Projects, a state-run scheme to build ten power plants set up eight years ago that has swallowed up $20 billion of government funds but left only four plants producing power.

Sahelian Power, the sole approved bidder for a distribution firm serving northern Nigeria's main city of Kano, has close ties with Sambo, a northerner, a power ministry official said.

He also noted that the only distribution company judged by the body Sambo chairs to have had no technically qualified bidders was in Sambo's own home state.

Sambo did not respond to a request for comment. He has publicly said does not own any firms bidding.

Many Nigerians say there is still grounds for optimism.

A senior power sector official said it was "inevitable" that those with political backing would be behind the bids. "That's just Nigeria," he said, but he added: "If they are supported by technically capable companies then does it really matter?"

It may not matter in the case of, say, Abubakar. The retired general is no power expert but Integrated Energy has partnered up with the Philippines' largest power retailer Manila Electric on a series of bids for state assets.

If all bids can find competent foreign partners like this, the process could yet get the lights to work, analysts say.

These men with big bucks may also have been the only people willing to take on the financial risk at this stage, starting with a minimum bid bond of $2 million, said Kayode Akindele, partner at Lagos-based financial adviser 46 Parallels.

Besides, in Nigeria, where nothing happens without the oligarchs, getting them involved may be the easiest option.

"It helps to have powerful interests part of the process," Akindele said. "Rather than outside, working against it."

Tomas Berdych outlasted Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday's final at the Stockholm Open.

The second-seeded Berdych rallied past Tsonga, the No. 1 seed, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Berdych improved to 2-2 in finals this year, beating Gael Monfils to win the Montpellier title in February before losing in the Madrid final to Roger Federer in May and falling to John Isner in the final at Winston-Salem in August.

The Czech is now 8-8 for his career in title matches.

"It feels pretty good to have won a second title this season," Berdych said. "When I was 2-4 down in the second set, I remained positive and focused on my game. Against Jo you have to stay positive until the last point. I am happy that I was able to turnaround the match and that's what makes this title special."

Tsonga was trying to win his third title of 2012. He won in Doha to start the campaign in January and also captured the Metz crown in September.

Berdych is 3-1 lifetime against Tsonga.

With the victory, Berdych took home $113,795.

Romney and Obama head to their debate prep corners

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With one debate left, President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney are retreating from the campaign trail to bone up on foreign policy, leaving the work of courting voters to their running mates.

Monday's debate in Boca Raton, Fla., with its focus on international affairs, is the third and final between the two rivals and comes just 15 days before the election.

Obama left Friday for Camp David, the presidential hideaway in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains. He was to remain there with advisers until Monday morning. Romney was to spend the weekend in Florida with aides preparing the debate.

Romney running mate Paul Ryan planned a campaign stop in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden was headed for St. Augustine, Fla.

Monday's 90-minute debate will be moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS News. It will be similar to the first debate, with both men standing at lecterns on a stage. Schieffer has listed five subject areas, with more time devoted to the Middle East and terrorism than any other topic.

While the economy has been the dominant theme of the election, foreign policy has attracted renewed media attention in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama had ranked well with the public on his handling of international issues and in fighting terrorism, especially following the death of Osama bin Laden. But the administration's response to the Libya attack and questions over levels of security at the consulate have given Romney and his Republican allies an issue with which to raise doubts about Obama's foreign policy leadership.

Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ on Friday that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions. "His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.

Obama stuck with domestic policy themes Friday, accusing Romney of moderating his stands and conveniently forgetting his past positions on economic and women's issues. He coined a new campaign term for his rival: "Romnesia."

Romney has spent large amounts of time off the campaign trail to prepare for the upcoming foreign policy debate. Aides say the additional time preparing is well-spent even if it comes at the expense of public events.

Meanwhile, the ad wars intensified even more with the release of new TV spots for both sides.

Romney's latest ad criticizes the president's policies on debt, health care, taxes, energy and Medicare. It echoes the argument Romney has made in the campaign's final month: The country cannot afford four more years of Obama in a number of areas, not just the economy. The campaign did not say where the spot would air.

And an independent group supporting Obama said it would begin airing ads that draw renewed attention to Romney's tenure at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The group, Priorities USA Action, is redoubling its efforts against Romney, re-airing an ad about an AMPAD plant in Marion, Ind. That spot features former employee Mike Earnest recalling being told to build a stage from which officials of the office supply company later announced mass layoffs.

He says, "It was like building my own coffin." That ad first aired in battleground states in the summer.

Romney aides have said AMPAD was in a struggling business to begin with, and Bain overall created many more jobs than were lost.

That ad will air in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Virginia and Wisconsin. The new campaign will be in addition to a $30 million effort against Romney policy proposals, the group said.

Boy's miracle cure makes 1st Native American saint

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Jake Finkbonner was so close to death after flesh-eating bacteria infected him through a cut on his lip that his parents had last rites performed and were discussing donating the 5-year-old's tiny organs.

Jake's 2006 cure from the infection was deemed medically inexplicable by the Vatican, the "miracle" needed to propel a 17th century Native American, Kateri Tekakwitha, on to sainthood. Kateri will be canonized on Sunday along with six other people, the first Native American to receive the honor.

Jake is fully convinced, as is the church, that the prayers his family and community offered to Kateri, including the placement of a relic of the soon-to-be saint on Jake's leg, were responsible for his survival.

Jake, now 12 and an avid basketball player and cross-country runner, will be present at the canonization, along with hundreds of members of his own Lummi tribe from northwest Washington state and reservations across the U.S. and Canada who have converged on Rome to honor one of their own. It's a ceremony the Catholic Church hopes will encourage Native Americans to keep to their Christian faith amid continued resentment among some that Catholicism was imposed on them by colonial-era missionaries centuries ago.

"I believe everybody has a purpose on this earth," Jake's mother Elsa Finkbonner said this week soon after the family arrived in Rome for the ceremony. "I think this Sunday Jake will define his purpose, and that's to make Kateri a saint."

Jake, a poised, lanky kid who just got his braces off, seems perfectly at ease with his role in the whole thing, gracious and grateful to the doctors who performed 29 surgeries to save his life and reconstruct his face.

"It's a really special thing," Jake told The Associated Press, flanked by his parents on a hotel terrace sofa. "We've never been to Rome, and especially meeting the pope? It'll be an experience of a lifetime."

Besides Kateri, Pope Benedict XVI will declare another American a saint Sunday, Mother Marianne Cope, a 19th century Franciscan nun from Utica, New York ? near where Kateri lived two centuries earlier ? who cared for lepers exiled to Hawaii's Kalaupapa Peninsula. Another new saint is Pedro Calungsod, a Filipino teenager who was killed in 1672 along with his Jesuit missionary priest by natives resisting their conversion efforts.

The Catholic Church creates saints to hold up models for the faithful, convinced that their lives ? even lived hundreds of years ago ? are still relevant to today's Catholics. The complicated saint-making procedure requires that the Vatican certify a "miracle" was performed through the intercession of the candidate ? a medically inexplicable cure that can be directly linked to the prayers offered by the faithful. One miracle is needed for beatification, a second for canonization.

In Jake's case, Kateri was already an important figure for Catholics in the Lummi tribe, of which his father Donny is a member. A carved wooden statue sits in the church on the Lummi reservation near Bellingham, Washington, 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of the Canadian border, where Jake's grandparents worshipped and where Donny remembers being told of Kateri's story as a child.

Known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," Kateri was born in 1656 to a pagan Iroquois father and an Algonquin Christian mother in what is today upstate New York. Her parents and only brother died when she was 4 during a smallpox epidemic that left her badly scarred and with impaired eyesight. She went to live with her uncle, a Mohawk, and was baptized Catholic by Jesuit missionaries. But she was ostracized and persecuted by other natives for her faith, and she died in Canada when she was 24.

The Rev. Tim Sauer was the Finkbonner's parish priest in Ferndale, Washington ? as well as the visiting pastor on the Lummi reservation ? when Jake cut his lip while playing basketball on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006. The necrotizing fasciitis bacteria that entered Jake's body through the cut immediately began spreading, and by the time Sauer arrived at Seattle Children's Hospital where Jake was airlifted two days later, Donny and Elsa Finkbonner were preparing to bury their son.

"At that point, we were desperate, and we were looking for anyone's help that would help our son," Donny said, recalling how doctors had said there wasn't much else for them to do but pray, and that they had come to terms with the possibility that their oldest of three children might not survive the week.

"We wanted Jake back with us desperately," he recalled. "But we were willing to give him up" to God.

Sauer, who performed the last rites ritual on Jake that Wednesday ? four days after he cut his lip ? said he immediately urged the Finkbonners and the congregation back on the reservation to pray to Kateri, thinking their shared Native American heritage and scarring diseases were relevant.

He said he did so first and foremost to save Jake, but also because he thought that Native Americans could use a "boost of faith" if one of their own were held up as a saint. Indigenous Catholics, he said, increasingly find themselves ostracized and criticized on their reservations for embracing and retaining the Christian faith spread by imperial colonizers.

"There's been a growing sense of a return to Native American spirituality on reservations, which are good things, but at the same time along with that has been some criticism that native people should let go of Christianity because that was brought by the 'white man' and should go back to their own native culture entirely," he said.

He said Kateri represents a perfect model for indigenous Catholics today, someone who resisted the ostracization of fellow natives and kept the faith.

For the devoutly Catholic Finkbonners, prayer was all they had left after Jake's doctors tried unsuccessfully for two weeks to stop the bacteria's spread. Jake was in a drug-induced coma for most of that time and says he doesn't remember much, a few memories "here and there, not all of it."

"Every day it would seem the news would get worse," Donny recalled. "I remember the last day that we met with the whole group of doctors, Elsa didn't even want to hear. She just got behind me and was holding on."

But rather than bad news, the doctors said the infection had stopped. "It was like a volcano that was erupting, and they opened him up and it was gone. It had stopped. It was a pretty amazing day," Donny said.

It took the Finkbonners several years to realize that the turning point had come a day after a friend of the family ? a nun named after Kateri ? had visited them in the hospital, prayed with them and placed a relic of the soon-to-be saint on Jake's leg.

"It took years for us to look at the calendar and recall that this is the day she came, this is the day she put the relic on, this is the day the infection stopped," Elsa said. "As the years of the investigation have gone on, little bits and pieces of puzzle seem to fall into place, and that's where it all makes sense now as to why Jake's story turned out so big."

Jake, who bears the scars of his ordeal, seems all too happy to be the center of attention this weekend. But he seems keen to move on from his celebrity. He has basketball tryouts when he gets back home and his studies ? he wants to be a plastic surgeon when he grows up. "Kateri was placed on this earth, and she has interceded on many people's behalf, she has defined her purpose," Elsa said. "I think Jake has bigger, larger plans in store for him."

A: If you no longer have a listing contract on the home with a broker and the person you are referring to did not preview the home while it was under contract, you have the right to sell the home to that person. Take a closer look at the listing paperwork as well. Many times there is a clause stating that an agent has a certain time frame to give you whats referred to as a ?protected list? of people who would be included in the protective clause, causing you to pay the former listing broker a commission within the X time frame if you sold the home to that person..

Rise in bad loans at mainland banks no - South China Morning Post

The level of non-performing loans is expected to keep rising at mainland banks, but analysts say the relatively slow pace is unlikely to weigh on their profits this year.

The average non-performing loan ratio of the nine banks listed in Hong Kong was expected to edge up in the third quarter to 0.98 per cent from the second quarter, Macquarie analysts said in a report, while the overdue loan ratio would remain stable at 1.32 per cent of total loans.

The banks are set to report their third-quarter results from October 25, and Macquarie expects average profit growth of 15 per cent for the first three quarters of this year from the year-earlier period, bolstered by growth in loans and assets.

Regarding the quality of assets at banks, some analysts forecast that the amount of bad loans would increase, but at a slow pace.

Chen Xingyu, an analyst with Phillip Securities in Shanghai, said the non-performing loan ratio and the underlying amount of non-performing loans would continue to rise in the next 12 months, but not significantly, making it unlikely that large provisions would be set aside for souring loans.

"The provision levels of lenders are higher than regulatory requirements. If the non-performing loans just go up slowly, they don't need to significantly increase their provisions," Chen said, adding that the rise in bad loans was unlikely to drag down profits this year.

For the full year, Chen expects three of the country's Big Four banks - Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank and Agricultural Bank of China - to post double-digit profit growth this year, while Bank of China would report single-digit growth.

Singapore-based research and intelligence company Asian Bankers said this week in its annual survey that the Big Four banks were likely to be "highly profitable" for the rest of the year.

"The country's economic hard landing is unlikely to seriously hamper their business," the survey said, projecting double-digit profit growth for the Big Four except BOC, which is expected to report a 7 per cent increase this year.

The four banks had "sheer dominance" in deposit business because of their recognised brand and extensive networks across the mainland, the survey said.

Rover digs up shiny particles on Mars

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has found some more bright stuff on the Red Planet, scientists say.

The Curiosity rover had dumped out a recent sample of Mars dirt after spotting shiny particles inside the hole dug by the shovel-like scoop on its robotic arm. Mission scientists were concerned that the bright material might be debris from the rover itself, so they ordered Curiosity to toss the Mars sample as a safety precaution, mission managers said in a statement.

As it turns out, the bright particles are actual Martian in origin, they added.

Curiosity is scooping up Mars dirt in a spot called "Rocknest" in preparation to deliver the first samples to a pair of instruments on its car-size body.The rover scooped its first Mars sample on Oct. 7, but further work was delayed when the rover's cameras spotted a bright object ? likely a piece of plastic ?on the ground in the area.

Scientists had cleared Curiosity to start scooping Mars dirt again ahead of the first sample study when they spotted the new bright material. Curiosity's initial Mars dirt scoops are designed to clean the rover's sampling system. [ Mars Rover Curiosity's Latest Amazing Photos ]

"Other small pieces of bright material in the Rocknest area have been assessed as debris from the spacecraft," NASA officials said in a statement Oct. 15. "The science team did not want to put spacecraft material into the rover's sample-processing mechanisms."

A new review of the latest bright material suggested it is actually a Mars phenomenon, and not litter from Curiosity. With that analysis in hand, rover scientists cleared Curiosity to take a third scoopful of Mars dirt.

"Confidence for going ahead with the third scooping was based on new assessment that other bright particles in the area are native Martian material," NASA officials said. "One factor in that consideration is seeing some bright particles embedded in clods of Martian soil."

Curiosity's third scoop of Mars dirt will be the first sample to actually be processed by the rover's Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument, known as CheMin. A later Mars sample will be scooped up and deposited inside the rover's Sample Analysis at Mars, or SAM, instrument.

The CheMin and SAM tools are two of the core instruments on Curiosity designed to determine if Mars may have once been habitable for microbial life.

The $2.5 billion Mars rover Curiosity has been exploring the Red Planet since Aug. 5, when it landed inside the planet's vast Gale Crater. Currently, the rover is driving toward its first major science target, a spot called "Glenelg" that offers a glimpse at interesting Martian terrain, scientists said.

The rover is about the size of a Mini Cooper car, making it the largest rover ever sent to another world. Curiosity is expected to spend at least two Earth years exploring the Red Planet.?
