Altec Lansing A3 Custom Triple Driver Earphone

Not many people are in the market for $1,000 custom-molded earphones. But for audio enthusiasts in the age of the iPod and portable media, excellent earphones are every bit as important as a solid home stereo system. If you're more likely to spend that kind of money on audio gear than a television, Altec Lansing's A3 Custom Triple Driver Earphone ($999.95 direct) may be just what you're looking for. Unlike many custom-molded pairs, like the excellent JH Audio JH16 Pro ($1,149, 5 stars), the A3's earpieces are made of soft silicon, which results in a more comfortable fit and earpieces that are less likely to be damaged when dropped. A non-detachable cable, along with some minor distortion on deep bass tracks at maximum volume, keeps the A3 just a hair away from perfection, but its beautiful audio performance and comfortable fit are sure to please most listeners.?

Design
High-end custom earphones all pretty much look the same, and the A3 isn't really breaking any new ground in this regard. Your pair, whether it's from Ultimate Ears, JH Audio, or Altec Lansing (which works with the British audio company ACS to make its custom line), is going to very much resemble (the inverse of) the inside of your ear and the entry point of your ear canal. Most pairs, like the aforementioned JH16 Pro and the Ultimate Ears' UE 18 Pro ($1,350, 5 stars) feature hard plastic molds. I know firsthand that these plastics are quite breakable, so the soft silicon earpiece of the A3 is a huge advantage. The soft material also warms as it sits in your canal, which helps secure the fit even better.

Unfortunately, the audio cable is not detachable?which means you'll have to send the A3 in for repair should an issue occur, rather than just buy a new cable.?Simply put, cables fail, eventually. Replacing one on the UE 18 Pro or JH16 Pro is as simple as going to the manufacturer's website and ordering a new cable. But the connection point for the A3 is embedded in the silicon earpiece, so you'll have to send the whole thing back to Altec to get it serviced. The cable also lacks stiffness on the over-the-ear section (the cable loops up, over, and behind the top ridge of your ear). Particularly in colder weather, the cable tends to flip out from behind the ear, since it doesn't have a stiff, moldable cable portion near the ear like the UE 18 Pro and JH16 Pro do. The fit of the earpieces is so secure that this is not an issue that would cause them to come loose or affect the sound?but it's likely to annoy you.

Most of the aforementioned custom pairs come in slightly ridiculous metallic boxes that are fine for roadies and touring musicians to carry around, but not terribly practical for the rest of us. The A3 comes in a stylish hard leather case, which also houses an earpiece cleaning tool (yes, wax will need to be removed from the earpieces periodically), a ?-inch adapter for larger headphone jacks, and a tube of "comfort cream" that some users will find unnecessary, but listeners in colder environments might find quite useful. It's basically a grease that you can apply to the canal portion of the earphone to ease the fit, and a very small amount should do the trick. A smaller zip-up carrying pouch is also included with the A3.

Performance
Even at this price, the A3 does not disappoint. On all material, be it classical or electronic music, the A3 offers crystal clear, dynamic, excellent audio with a wide-ranging frequency response. The A3 can get quite loud?uncomfortably so. At these top, blatantly unsafe listening levels, it is my duty to note that the A3 will distort slightly on deep bass tracks. It is also my duty to inform you that if you plan on listening at these levels for even short periods of time on a regular basis, you will not be able to hear the distortion in a few years.

At safe listening levels, there is not a hint of distortion, and a song with tremendous low-end, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," is reproduced with generous bass response that is always articulate, never booming. The A3 offers a more or less flat response?the highs do not seem to be tweaked too much, and the lows offer only a slight boost. This is not a bass-lover's dream pair of earphones, this is a pair for audiophiles and music lovers who wish to hear audio the way it sounded when the engineers mixed and mastered it. John Adam's "The Chairman Dances" sounds clear and compelling, with each aspect of the instrumentation, from lower register strings to high-register, wooden percussion seemingly owning its own space in your ears. It's not quite like sitting in the sweet spot of Carnegie Hall, but it's about a tenfold improvement over cheap earphones?and even some quite expensive pairs. From folk to rock to hip hop to jazz, there's not a genre that doesn't work well on the A3.

Conclusions
Have I heard better custom in-ear monitors before? Yes. I enjoyed the performance of the JH Audio JH16 Pro more than just about any in-canal pair I've ever heard?but it'll run you another $150. Sitting squarely at $1,000, the A3's soft earpieces make it a unique standout offering. Ultimate Ears, now owned by Logitech, has a few models in this general range, including the higher-priced UE 18 Pro and the Ultimate Ears' UE 11 Pro ($1,150, 5 stars). Choosing which sounds best amongst the UE pairs or the A3 likely comes down to whether you prefer flat response (go with the A3) or if you'd like a touch more bass in the mix (check out the UE lineup). The JH16 Pro has the most realistic response of the whole bunch.

Admittedly, the lack of a detachable cable and a stiff over-ear cable section is a little disappointing at this price. Nonetheless, the A3 sounds phenomenal, and if you are in the market for high-end custom earphones, you have a new enticing option to consider. If the A3 is well outside your price range, consider the Ultimate Ears' UE 4 Pro ($399, 4.5 stars). At less than half the cost of all of the above mentioned models, it's still a custom-molded earphone pair with high-quality drivers.

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) March 12, 2012 ? Garry Marshall, award-winning television and film director, writer, producer, and actor, will be the principal speaker at Lafayette?s 177th Commencement on Saturday, May 19. He will also be awarded an honorary degree.

Best known for creating the popular television series Happy Days and The Odd Couple, Marshall also has directed more than 25 movies including The Flamingo Kid, Nothing in Common, Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, The Princess Diaries, Valentine?s Day and, most recently, the romantic comedy New Year?s Eve, which premiered in December.

The National Association of Broadcasters announced in January that Marshall will be inducted into its Broadcasting Hall of Fame in April.

Lafayette selected Marshall as its Commencement speaker because his commitment to the performing and visual arts reflects those of the College, says President Daniel H. Weiss. For example, plans are underway for a $10 million expansion of Lafayette?s arts campus on North Third Street that will house a new film and media studies program, and a Global Arts Infusion and Visiting Artists Initiative was created with an $800,000 Mellon Foundation grant to further integrate art into the College?s curriculum.

?Having him here is part of our celebration of the arts,? says Weiss, noting Marshall owns and operates the Falcon Theater in Burbank, Calif., with his daughter, Kathleen.

With a career that spans more than 50 years, Marshall began as a joke writer for comedians Joey Bishop and Phil Foster, then moved to Hollywood to write for television, first for the Jack Paar Show. As? executive producer of sitcoms in the late 1970s, he helped ABC win the ratings race for the first time in the network?s history. By the end of the 1978-79 season, four of the five highest-rated shows of the year were Marshall?s, for which Publishers Weekly dubbed him ?king of the sitcoms.? From 1970 to 1996, he produced 27 series or made-for-television movies. These included, besides those previously mentioned, Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy, The New Odd Couple, and Who?s Watching the Kids.

Marshall?s television series were nominated for five prime-time Emmys (one for Mork and Mindy, the others for The Odd Couple). He is the recipient of the Lucy Award, presented by Women in Film in recognition of excellence and innovation in creative works that have enhanced the perception of women through the medium of television (1996); and the Legend Award, presented by TV Land to entertainers whose body of work has stood the test of time and ranks among the most memorable and celebrated in TV and movie history (2008). Among his many other honors are the Creative Achievement Award from the American Comedy Awards (1990), Motion Picture Showmanship Award from the Publicists of the International Cinematographers Guild (1992), the Valentine Davies Award from the Writers Guild of America (1995), the Lifetime Achievement Award in Television from the Producers Guild of America (1998), the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award from the American Cinema Editors (2004), and the PRISM Award for Best Feature Film for Georgia Rule (2008).

He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1983.

He holds a B.S. in journalism from Northwestern University, where the Barbara and Garry Marshall Studio wing of Louis Hall, which houses the film sound stage, is named in honor of Marshall and his wife, the former Barbara Wells.

New iPad Runs 4G? Not In Australia, Says Consumer Watchdog

One of the selling points for the new iPad has been the fact that it supports 4G, but at least in one market, that 4G promise is facing a challenge. In what might be a case of a storm in a teapot, the Competition and Consumer Commission in Australia has said that Apple cannot advertise its newest tablet as 4G-capable because it doesn't actually work on the 4G network that exists in the country. The regulator plans to take its argument to federal court this Wednesday, where it will try to order Apple to change its marketing of the product. It also wants Apple to offer refunds to any buyers that feel they have been mislead by the advertising.

It's been a while since we've heard the name SyncTV 'round these parts, but perhaps we'll be seeing a bit more of it now that HTC has a stake in the streaming video company. As part of a deal with Intertrust, HTC has purchased 20 percent of its new partner's subsidiary. In addition, the Taiwanese manufacturer has licensed a broad portfolio of patents from the Sunnyvale firm, primarily dealing with DRM. Unfortunately we have no specifics about how HTC plans to leverage its new media property, but hopefully they're working on some fun surprises even as we speak. (Though, most likely, we're just looking at one more piece of manufacturer-installed bloatware.) Check out the brief, and ultimately not very informative, PR after the break.

Brushing teeth: New 'massage method' quadruples protection against tooth decay, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2012) ? Do you really want to avoid cavities in your teeth? Try massaging them with a high-fluoride toothpaste after lunch. "Rubbing toothpaste onto your teeth increases the fluoride protection by 400%," says Anna Nordstr?m, dentist, PhD and researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Eight years ago a new brand of toothpaste was launched in Sweden with more than three times as much fluoride as standard toothpaste. Available without prescription, it is aimed primarily at those with high caries risk.

First scientific evaluation

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy have now performed the first scientific evaluation of the effect of this so called "high-fluoride toothpaste." The study has resulted in a new method that quadruples the level of protection from fluoride.

Four times better protection

In the study, 16 volunteers tested a variety of brushing techniques, using either high-fluoride or standard toothpaste, and brushing either two or three times a day.

"The study revealed that those who used a high-fluoride toothpaste three times a day had four times better fluoride protection in the mouth than those who used standard toothpaste twice a day," says researcher Anna Nordstr?m from the Institute of Odontology at the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Rub your teeths after lunch

Also tested was a new method developed in collaboration with professor Dowen Birkhed, which involves rubbing toothpaste onto your teeth with a finger.

"This 'massage' method proved to be at least as effective as a third brushing in increasing the amount of fluoride in the mouth," Anna Nordstr?m explains. "Rubbing the front of your teeth with toothpaste can be an easy way of giving your teeth a third "shot" of fluoride during the day, after lunch for example. But this should not replace brushing with a fluoride toothpaste morning and evening -- it's an extra."

Daily use is essential

Brushing with fluoride toothpaste has played -- and continues to play -- a major role in combating tooth decay, and there is strong scientific evidence that daily use of fluoride toothpaste has a pronounced preventive effect.

The study Effect of a third application of toothpaste (1450 and 5000 ppm F), including a "massage" method, on fluoride retention and pH drop in plaque was published in Acta Odontologica Scandinavia.

THE RESEARCHER?S TOP TIPS ? Use toothpaste at least twice a day, after breakfast and before going to bed. ? If necessary, brush a third time or rub on some toothpaste instead. ? If you have problems with cavities, choose a toothpaste with a higher fluoride content. ? Avoid rinsing out the toothpaste with water.

Regarding the March 5 cover story on civility ("The civility gap"): I agree with those concerned that we need more civility in government, media, and new technologies.

But when comparing the present with the past, let's not forget the routine incivility and even violence toward minorities for much of the 20th century, when "decent" meant not sharing clubs or summer hotels with Jews.

Compare the civility of today's "Occupy" movement with the rudeness of 1960s protesters. And compare the relative good manners of police in response to Occupiers with those police who beat up demonstrators in the '60s.

Incivility seems to move around, but I find American society today far kinder, gentler, and more respectful today than in my youth.

Thank you for the informative and thoughtful March 12 cover story, "Inside America's gun culture." I am curious about a set of statistics that was not mentioned: domestic violence rates and guns.

Part of the problem is that domestic violence crimes are not recorded as such in many municipalities. However, I do know that a woman who is in an unsafe home situation is at much greater risk to be harmed or killed if her abusive partner/spouse has a firearm.

That is an important topic worth covering.

Every year those of us who make mobile games have seen ourselves (and have been treated) as the younger upstart brothers to console game makers. We saw ourselves as inferiors and we were treated as tag-alongs. But this year I?m seeing something very different : mobile game shops are suddenly disinterested in ?growing up? to become console/PC shops ? and the large, older-brother game studios seem confused as to why they aren?t getting the love they?ve always enjoyed.

When we made our first mobile game, G:Into The Rain there was a very conscious notion that this was a stepping-stone. It was a way to dip our toes in the water, learn a few key skills, and all part of our deliberate plan to make a future epic XBox title. We were also perfectly normal in that regard. Every mobile game developer we talked too, both at GDC and elsewhere basically had the same plan. After all that was where the ?real? game developers were. That?s where blockbuster hits like Call of Duty or BioShock were posting such inspiring headlines. Mobile gaming was to console or PC gaming what the Memphis Redbirds are to the St. Louis Cardinals. We were rookies and we all longed to make it to the big league.

This relationship was dysfunctional from both ends though. We may have looked up to our console counterparts with an unhealthy degree of hero worship but they also looked down on us with a kind of aristocratic patronization. ?Thats cute kid. Come back when you can afford a real game engine.? By last year?s conference, the disdain had turned into something more like contempt as several sessions sought to address the ?problem? of mobile gaming ? specifically that we were sucking up all the attention and resources from real games.

Now in 2012, I?m suddenly aware of some rather obvious facts as I hob-nob quite comfortably with a half dozen very normal, unassuming, sudden mobile millionaires at the TouchArcade party:

Who needs the risk, the headache, the multi-year commitment? Maybe this mobile thing isn?t a stepping stone after all. Maybe its a quite sufficient and complete segment all on its own ? a segment with far more generous numbers. Perhaps this is why I?m hearing stories of VCs looking to invest in mobile but hearing ?No thanks ? we don?t need your money.?

In 2011 GDC felt as though big studios still had the lion?s share of the attention ? but this year it seems very different. The difference is easiest seen by glancing around any lounge, any party, or any hang out in town. Everybody, and I mean everybody, is passing around iPads and Androids and Kindles to show off whatever mobile project they?re excited about. They are handing their own personal devices around instead of queuing up at the gorgeous branded game kiosks. Even sitting in the Microsoft lounge with a dozen XBox and Kinnect games waiting to be played I keep watching the staff trying to entice people to dance or shoot or jump?but instead we?re all sitting in their rather stylish chairs doing something else ? working our touch screens, totally content to play Mega Jump or Wind Up Knight while the Halo station sits there, alone, silently asking if its 15minutes is up. We truly are no longer pining for console love.

NOUAKCHOTT/TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Mauritanian authorities acting with French help arrested Muammar Gaddafi's former chief of intelligence, Abdullah al-Senussi, as he entered the West African country on a false passport, officials said on Saturday.

Senussi, who for decades before the late dictator's fall inspired fear and hatred in ordinary Libyans, is sought by the Hague-based International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity. The whereabouts of Senussi, the last major figure at large from Gaddafi's regime, had been unclear for months.

But his arrest immediately raised questions as to where he would be tried. The ICC urged Mauritania to send him to The Hague while the French government said it wanted him extradited to France, citing his alleged role in the 1989 bombing of an airliner over Niger in which 54 French nationals died. Libya also said it wanted to extradite Senussi.

"Today we confirm the news of the arrest of Abdullah al-Senussi," Libyan government spokesman Nasser al-Manee told a news conference in Tripoli.

"He was arrested this morning in Nouakchott airport and there was a young man with him. We think it is his son," he said, confirming a Mauritanian state news agency report that Senussi was arrested with a false Malian passport arriving from Casablanca, Morocco.

France, which led Western backing for the popular uprising that toppled Gaddafi, said it had cooperated with Mauritanian authorities over the arrest and that it would send an arrest warrant to Mauritania "in the next few hours".

The statement from the office of President Nicolas Sarkozy noted that Senussi had been sentenced in absentia for the 1989 bombing of a UTA airliner, in which a total 170 people were killed. Families of the victims immediately demanded he face justice in France.

Yet Libya said he would receive a fair trial there, while the ICC also declared its desire for him to be transferred to The Hague war crimes court - creating a possible legal tug-of-war over Senussi.

"For the time being, there is an ICC arrest warrant for him, and the court requests it to be implemented. This remains valid, unless the ICC judges decide otherwise," ICC spokesman Fadi El-Abdallah said.

Senussi is suspected of a key role in the killing of more than 1,200 inmates at Tripoli's Abu Salim prison in 1996. It was the arrest of a lawyer for victims' relatives that sparked Libya's Arab Spring revolt in February last year.

The ICC has charged Senussi and Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam as being "indirect co-perpetrators" of murder and persecution.

But Guillaume Denoix de Saint Marc, president of the families association for the UTA bombing, said they counted on France to ensure Senussi faced justice for the attack.

"We never lost hope that those responsible for this attack, the most deadly that has hit France, would face justice," he said in a statement.

Senussi's arrest provoked equally fierce emotion on the streets of Tripoli.

"Senussi is Gaddafi's black box, he has a lot of information," Tripoli resident Mustafa Jhyma said. "He has blood on his hands he should be brought here and tried in Libya."

"This is a big moment for Libyans. I wish that he had been arrested here," another resident Abdullah al-Mory said.

Saif al-Islam was captured disguised as a Bedouin in the Sahara in November is awaiting trial in Libya on rape and murder charges. Libya's National Transitional Council says he will get a fair hearing but his supporters want him sent to the Hague.

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, an army general who was toppled his predecessor in a 2008 coup, won election in a 2009 vote decried by rivals as rigged.

Yet France has hailed him as a "key partner" and he went on to play a leading role in the awkward African diplomacy over Libya that finally led to the continent recognizing the National Transitional Council as its new leaders.

One Year into Syria's Rebellion, the Assads Are Watching Harry Potter, Shopping

Which Hogwarts house does President Bashar al-Assad identify with when he curls up on the couch with his wife to watch Harry Potter and the Death Hallows Part II? And when he emails her the lyrics from country-and-western crooner Blake Shelton's "God Gave Me You," declaring that "The person that I've been lately / Ain't who I wanna be," is he talking about the fact that his security forces are pulverizing the Baba Amr neighborhood of Homs, or has he just been a little snippy around the house with Asma and the kids that morning? What about when Assad downloads New Order's 1987 electro-pop hit Bizarre Love Triangle from i-Tunes: is he thinking of his regime's ties to Iran and Russia, or is he simply remembering a more carefree time on some London dance-floor before the death of his older brother -- and his father's heir apparent -- Basel in 1994 dragged him back home to be groomed to run the regime?

These are some of questions that we are able to ask as as result of the extraordinary dump of hacked personal emails from the Syrian strongman and his wife published by the Guardian on Wednesday. As fascinating as they may be, however, the emails may ultimately be of more use to those marketing luxury goods (from fondue sets to Ming vases) to the cosmopolitan elites of the Levant than to those trying to understand where the rebellion that marks its first anniversary on Thursday is headed. Well, except for one thing: The emails seem to reveal that Assad is privately contemptuous of the political reforms he has offered as an alternative to international demands that he step down, and appears almost insouciantly confident that his systematic repression will prevail over the year-long rebellion against his rule, just as his allies in Tehran -- from whom he is taking coaching tips -- have suppressed the challenge of the Green Movement.

Looking at the balance of forces on the ground, it's not hard to see why he may be feeling lucky, at least in the near term. In recent weeks, he has sent armored units to recapture rebel-held neighborhoods first in Homs and then in Idlib. Having successfully driven opposition fighters outside of those areas they had held for months, he has turned his forces' attention back to Deraa in the south, cradle of the rebellion. Of course, these operations have exacted a terrible toll in civilian life and suffering, not sufficient to prompt foreign powers capable of intervening to throw off the restraints they have imposed on themselves out of fear of the consequences of plunging into a messy civil war.

Brutal though he may have been, Assad appears to have carefully calibrated his repression to remain below some unspoken threshold -- the U.N. reports that at least 7,500 Syrians have been killed over the past year of rebellion, but more than twice that number were killed in the space of a week in Hama 20 years ago as the current president's father, Hafez al-Assad bombed a Muslim Brotherhood rebellion into submission. For Western powers as well as key neighbors such as Turkey, the death toll alone has not created sufficient motivation for armed intervention given the factors giving them pause.

The rebellion is too widespread now, and too much blood has been spilled, to be stamped out by Assad. But his forces appear to remain able to prevent rebel fighters from holding on to significant population centers. And the opposition continues to fracture, with new defections announced Wednesday from the Syrian National Council (SNC), a body which Western and Arab governments had hoped to anoint as a kind of government-in-waiting, but appears to be fragmenting. The opposition is split over questions of taking up arms, of seeking foreign military intervention, of political authority over events on the ground, and of the role of the Muslim Brotherhood. The SNC's authority over protest groups on the ground remains questionable, and it has lately been challenged by rival formations. Nor does it control the main military umbrella group, the Free Syrian Army, which is itself very loosely organized and facing challenges from rivals. The foreign powers most inclined towards some form of intervention have made a united and coherent opposition one of their key conditions, but right now that remains an elusive goal.

Although the regime on the front foot in the military contest, political protest action continues across the country, serving as a reminder that even if it manages to force rebel fighters out of their strongholds, it is unlikely to be able restore stability that existed before the rebellion broke out a year ago. The fear that had kept the population mostly compliant in the two decades since Hama has been broken. Indeed, the scale of repression has inculcated in many in the rebel camp a belief that giving up the fight would bring certain death.

So, the deadlock on the ground, and the division and paralysis in the international community has turned the spotlight onto a U.N.-Arab League mission spearheaded by former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, sent to engage with Assad, his enemies and international stakeholders in search of a formula to end the violence. But any illusion that Assad was simply going to heed the terms of an Arab League plan that would require him to step down and hand power to a unity government was quickly dashed when the Syrian leader told Annan, last weekend, that he would not negotiate with an opposition bearing arms. And rebel groups insisted they wouldn't negotiate while the regime was unleashing its military on opposition strongholds.

Those who had mandated Annan's mission included Western and Arab countries that believe Assad can't be part of any political solution and must accept his ouster, and others -- most importantly Russia and China -- that insist that the regime must be an integral part of any solution that has any hope of ending the violence and moving towards a more inclusive political system. Annan reports back to the U.N. Security Council on Friday, although he'll have little choice but to ask for more time.

As the death toll continues to escalate, stopping the violence becomes the urgent priority of the international community. The fact that a year after the uprising began, Assad continues to browse the i-Tunes store in search of sentimental songs, chortle over snarky YouTube videos and watch Neville Longbottom lop off the head of Nigini the snake in the climactic battle at Hogwarts suggests he's not done yet. After all, it's not as if the emails revealed that he or his wife are contacting realtors in Doha or Moscow.
