Logitech launches TV Cam HD for living room video chats: built-in Skype, 720p, $200

Logitech launches TV Cam HD for living room video chats builtin Skype, 720p, $200 video

If Cisco's ill-fated Umi video conferencing system had been more like this, would it have survived? Logitech is about to find out, one way or the other, once its TV Cam HD -- recently spotted at the FCC -- arrives in the US this month. The $199.99 device hooks up to your TV and contains all the processing power needed to run Skype and transmit wide-angle, 720p footage of your couch over WiFi or Ethernet. Unlike the previous TV Cam, there's no need for a Viera Connect HDTV -- anything with HDMI-in will do. The company is banking on the notion that families will forgo the use of their existing mobile devices and laptops in favour of an always-on dedicated system with incoming call alerts, four noise-cancelling mics and a Carl Zeiss lens that "gets the whole family in the video call, so everyone from grandparents to grandchildren can move around naturally." If you're tempted, the publicity video after the break gives a decent overview of the product in action.

New treatment target for deadly brain tumors

ScienceDaily (Aug. 1, 2012) ? A study by UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers published August 1 in Nature reveals new insight into why the most common, deadly kind of brain tumor in adults recurs and identifies a potential target for future therapies.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) currently is considered incurable. Despite responding to initial therapy, the cancer almost always returns. GBM is a fast-growing, malignant brain tumor that occurred in 15 percent of the estimated 22,000 Americans diagnosed with brain and nervous system tumors in 2010. The median survival rate is about 15 months, according to the National Cancer Institute.

"We identified a subset of brain tumor cells that are slower growing or remain at rest, and appear to be the source of cancer recurrence after standard therapy in which the drug temozolomide is given to stop the tumor's growth," said Dr. Luis Parada, chairman of developmental biology and director of the Kent Waldrep Center for Basic Research on Nerve Growth and Regeneration. "Current therapy targets fast-growing tumor cells but not those responsible for new tumors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first identification of a cancer stem-like cell in a spontaneously forming tumor inside a mammal."

Using a genetically engineered mouse model of GBM, the researchers found that the resting tumor cells act more like stem cells -- the non-cancerous cells the body uses to repair and replenish itself -- which exist in a resting state until needed, he explained.

The existence of cancer stem cells in solid tumors remains controversial, Dr. Parada said, with some scientists in the field taking the concept for granted and others rejecting it outright. In addition, the definition of a cancer stem cell is a moving target, hence the use of the term stem-like cell in this study, he said.

"We are trying to better understand these cells. The important point is that we now are faced with technical obstacles, not conceptual ones," said Dr. Parada.

Other UT Southwestern researchers involved include lead author and former postdoctoral student of developmental biology Dr. Jian Chen, who is now a senior scientist at OriGene Technologies in Wuxi, China; Yanjiao Li, a research associate of developmental biology; Dr. Tzong-Schiue Yu, a former graduate student of developmental biology and pediatrics; Dr. Ren?e M. McKay, assistant professor of developmental biology; Dr. Dennis K. Burns, professor of pathology; and Dr. Steven G. Kernie, a former associate professor of pediatrics and developmental biology. Drs. Kernie and Yu are now at Columbia University Medical Center.

The study was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, the Goldhirsh Foundation, and the James S. McDonnell Foundation.

Pets May Help Kids With Autism - Pet Health Center

Study Shows Bonding With New Pet May Improve Socialization

Aug. 1, 2012 -- By just about any measure of accomplishment, Danny Gross would be considered a successful young adult.

The 25-year-old is a popular graduate student in cinematic arts at the University of Southern California, and his mother, Patty, calls him an all-around great kid.

He is also on the autism spectrum.

His mother is convinced that his childhood golden retriever, Madison, who joined the family when Danny was 7, played a part in his success, and a new study backs up the claim.

Pets May Help Some Autistic Kids

Although there is plenty of anecdotal evidence linking pet ownership to better socialization in children with autism, the study is among the first to explore the connection.

Researchers in France tested behavior and intelligence in 260 children with autism who did and did not have pets -- mostly dogs and cats.

They found that those who became pet owners after the age of 5 performed better than children without pets on two key measures of social functioning -- offering comfort and offering to share.

The extent to which the children bonded with the new pet was a major determinant of whether pet ownership influenced social interactions.

Having a pet from birth did not appear to influence the socialization behaviors, leading the researchers to conclude that the arrival of a pet when a child is old enough to recognize the addition may be critical.

The new study appears in the August issue of the journal PLoS One.

"To my knowledge, this is the first time that a study has demonstrated that the adoption of a pet is linked to social improvements for individuals with autism," says researcher Marine Grandgeorge, PhD, of France's Hopital de Bohars.

Large Pet Studies Needed

The study was small and Grandgeorge says larger, more rigorously designed studies are needed to confirm the findings.

And she warns against getting a pet without considering whether the move is appropriate for the entire family.

Alycia Halladay, PhD, who is director of environmental research for the education and advocacy group Autism Speaks, agrees.

"We certainly don't want families who are already stressed to get the idea that they need to add a pet to their family if that pet is not really wanted," she says.

She says the new study offers some of the first scientific evidence to back up the anecdotal stories suggesting that pets help some autistic children learn to interact with the world, but she cautions that the benefits were limited.

Patty Dobbs Gross, Danny's mother, says parents should not get a pet for an autistic child unless the child shows some interest.

"Families with children on the autism spectrum try a lot of different things, but this is not something you do just to check it off your list," she says.

Another greedy businessman for Obama and the Democrats to ...

This video is put out by the office of?House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy; it was accompanied by the following release:

VIDEO RELEASE: ?Taxation Nation: Angelo?s Story?

WASHINGTON. D.C.?? House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) today?released??Taxation Nation: Angelo?s Story,??a new video in which third generation restaurant owner-operator Michael Passalacqua tells the 73-year-old story of Angelo?s Restaurant, drawing the connection between the health of America?s restaurant industry with the local economies their business revenue goes to support and what effect President Barack Obama?s tax hike would have on communities like Washington, PA.

CLICK HERE to watch ?Taxation Nation: Angelo?s Story?

?My family has been in business for 73 years and I truly see us as a fabric of the community,? Michael says in the video. ?This economy is just absolutely teetering and raising taxes on anybody at this particular time seems to me to be relatively foolish.?

Michael paints the grim reality facing an industry whose sole source of income comes from consumer spending, saying: ?It?s just going to be tons of money dropped right out of the economy immediately.?

America?s restaurants employ nearly one in 10 Americans and are responsible for approximately 537,900 jobs in Pennsylvania according to the National Restaurant Association.? Not only are they a major source of employment, but 93% of food locations are small businesses employing fewer than 50 employees.

On July 9, 2012, President Obama announced his plan to increase taxes on almost a million small businesses ? a move that independent analysts at?Ernst & Young confirm would result in 710,000 fewer Americans jobs and reduce economic output by 1.3% in 2013.

Last Friday, it was reported that second quarter GDP grew at only 1.5% ? down from 2.0% in the previous quarter ? as consumer spending reduced significantly.

This week, House Republicans led by Majority Whip McCarthy will vote to ensure that no American family or small business sees their taxes increased right now.?

?With the economy already at a near stand still, the President?s proposed tax hike on American small businesses comes at the work possible time for job creators,? Majority Whip McCarthy said.? ?Independent reports confirm that raising taxes on more than 900,000 small businesses threatens 710,000 jobs and would reduce economic output by 1.3%.? It just doesn?t make any sense to punish American families and small businesses already struggling to make ends meet in this tough economy.?

Can Your Employer Drop your Health Insurance Benefits While Out On

By Karl Voigt

We are often asked by clients if their employer can drop their Health insurance benefits while they are out on Workers? Compensation. Unfortunately, the short answer is ?Probably yes.? There is no law in Pennsylvania that requires an employer to pay for health insurance premiums while you are disabled from work due to a work-related injury.

If your employment is governed by an employment contract for a collective bargaining agreement, that agreement may compel your employer to continue paying health insurance premiums during an absence from work. Absent such an agreement, your employer is not obligated to continue to pay your premiums. However, if there is no such agreement, we must look elswhere

Under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), you are entitled to 12 weeks of leave if your employer is large enough and you have enough hours. If you apply for leave under FMLA, your employer must preserve your health insurance benefits, as well as your job, for 12 weeks. However, if you made a contribution toward your health insurance premiums when you were employed before your injury, you must continue to make those contributions while out on Worker?s Compensation.

If your health insurance policy is about to be canceled, you must receive a COBRA notice from your employer. This will allow you to continue coverage, but you must pay for your own premiums. As you can see, there is very little protection of your health insurance coverage while you are disabled from work due to a work injury.

These Are the Oldest Stars In Our Galaxy [Astronomy]

Like NASA says, these stars look like the thousand bright flashes of people taking photos just before a big rock concert. In reality, they are the oldest stars in our very own Milky Way, captured by Hubble. More »
